Peranakan Museum! (Monday, June 7, 2010 / 3:34 AM)

My Mom and I went to the Peranakan Museum on the 4th of June, which was a Friday. We took the bus down to Plaza Singapura to get some lunch first before we took an arduous walking journey from there to Peranakan Museum which was located at Armenian Street. You may think that it is very near to the shopping mall but we were wrong. By car, yes. Maybe only five minutes. By foot? Haha! We took like more than fifteen minutes under the sweltering hot sun! Since we were quite unfamiliar with the roads while walking, we took the wrong turn and walked through Fort Canning and the National Museum of Singapore. Talking about killing two birds with one stone! LOL! Can you imagine? By the time we reached the museum, we were already sticky of sweat from the humidity of the weather!
Nonetheless, the museum was awesome. Though I do admit the Peranakan Museum can never compared to the one in Penang! BUT, I, being a student, get to get into the museum for FREE! Yay!
The one in Singapore is different from the one in Penang in the way that it is more tech-savvy. It has air-cons instead of fans and uses projectors, recorded mini television documentaries instead of guides. It has more organised galleries too as compared to the ones in Penang.
Singapore's Peranakan Museum has a total of 10 galleries: Gallery 1 (Origins: Basically it shows the birth of the Peranakans and that they mostly stayed around Southeast Asia.), Galleries 2-5 (Wedding: Man! There were so many things about the wedding as the Peranakans go through the elaborate 12-day wedding. From the Chiu Thau [coming of age] to the lap chai [exchange of gifts], their wedding rituals are simply tedious but impressionable.), Gallery 6 (Nonya: Talking about how life as a Nonya teenage girl was like before getting married. How they were trained to perfect the art of beadwork and their techniques in making other textile arts.), Gallery 7 (Religion: The scary part where the faces of the Buddhist or Taoist gods or idols appear. No offence to the Buddhist and Taoist, me being a Christian, I am kinda scared of the gods you all pray and worship to. There was this death and mourning section too where it displayed a coffin and some recordings of people mourning with grieve can be heard. It was so disturbing and nerve-racking.), Gallery 8 (Public Life: Talking about how the famous Peranakans like Lim Kim San and Tan Kim Seng whom have helped in Singapore's society. This gallery also talks about the nonyas women joining the work force after World War II.), Gallery 9 (Food and Feasting: Yum yum! FOOD! The word makes my mouth water. The pictures of Peranakan food on the mini television alone too! It shows us the Tok Panjang, the porcelain dish ware and the kitchen.) and Gallery 10 (Conversations: Nothing much. It is just about how the culture has evolved over time and what the future holds for the modern-day Peranakans.)
There was this exhibition named 'Ramayana Revisited: A Tale of Love and Adventure'. Since it was for a limited time only, my Mom and I went to see it. It was not my type because it was Indian Literature but I went to check it out anyway, only to be confused by all the stories.
Since my Mom and I were hungry, we walked towards the City Hall MRT Station just to realise that if we had started our walking journey from there, it will be shorter route as compared to from Plaza Singapura.
After watching Buffetlicious on Channel 5 last Thursday regarding a restaurant named 'Lenas'. It was well-known for its pizzas and desserts. Gosh! The list of desserts were countless! No wonder it has dessert buffet every Sunday when you can order as much desserts as you want! We were so ravenous that we ordered two pizzas. The pizzas were sort of like skinny pizza, which was light and crispy. Truly delicious! The ambience is cool too. By the time we finished the pizzas, we could only order one dessert. We ordered a 'Very Berry' Ice Cream, I don't exactly remember the name but it has a tall glass filled with vanilla ice-cream and many kinds of berries like strawberries and blueberries.
I had a great time that day, I hope I can visit more museums this year!
P.S. I will blog about the NYEC Race tomorrow. So, please bear with me! Thank you!
